3 Most Common Types of Welding
Welding is a process that uses high-powered electric welding equipment to connect two or more pieces of metal or non-ferrous materials. It is a common process used in many kinds of construction, electrical and mechanical repair, and industrial processes. Here are some of the common types of welding used by a professional welder are the following.
Shielded Metal Arc Welding
Also called SMAW, this uses a metal arc to melt metal. It uses an electrode that can be made up of rods, wires, or metal pieces to conduct electricity. These electrodes are placed at both the start and end of the joint. To set the arc, the welder positions their body in such a way that their body is inside the welding arc. They then move the arc electrode that is in contact with the metal pieces to the start of the joint. Then, they apply an electrical current to the electrode by touching the metal to the work.
Cut-To-Length Welding
Cut-To-Length welding uses a long piece of metal or non-ferrous material that is welded to make a connection between two pieces of longer material. It is popular in the construction industry because of its ease of use and its ability to carry heavy loads.
MIG welding
It is a process where a flux-coated electrode is placed in front of a special filler wire. A wire is then passed through the filler wire and then into the work at a precise angle. Then, they are both secured in place with a grounding clamp, and then the current is run through the wire and filler wire. When the current is applied, the filler wire melts, which then passes through the filler wire and into the joint. This combination then welds the two pieces together.
