Welding Dos and Donts

Things Not to Do When Welding

Welding is a method that uses extreme temperatures to cut through metal or to connect multiple pieces of metal. And because of these extreme temperatures, welding comes with unique hazards that workers must be fully aware of. Picking up and using an arch welder without any previous experience puts you at risk of serious injury. Below is a list of the top 4 things you should never do.

Not Preheating

A common mistake workers make is not preheating. So, why is that? Among other things, it prevents cracking. There is nothing more frustrating than attempting to weld an object only for it to crack. You can significantly reduce the chances of this happening just by preheating it before you weld it.

Not Wearing The Right Safety Gear

Another mistake you should avoid is not wearing the right safety gear. Some people have the mindset that safety gear only slows them down. While this is true to a certain degree, it can save your life. Before starting a job, make sure to gear up in a helmet that has a fitted lens, gloves, jacket, leather apron, and thick boots.

Welding On Unstable Surfaces

You can’t expect to safely weld something unless it is on a flat and even surface. Never attempt to weld on surfaces that are not stable, as this places you at risk. If necessary, clamp the object down to keep it in place.

Not Cleaning or Maintaining The Arc Welder

The final mistake that far too many workers make is not cleaning or maintaining their devices. Welding arcs, like any other tool, will gather dust and dirt over their life. In order to keep yours in optimal condition, you must clean it regularly.
